Leighton Buzzard Railway

Known as England’s Friendly Little Line, the Leighton Buzzard Railway is one of Bedfordshire’s most unique visitor attractions and one of Britain’s most important heritage railways.
Opened in 1919 to transport sand from the quarries around Leighton Buzzard and Heath & Reach, it is one of the last surviving narrow-gauge industrial railways in the country. Built using surplus equipment from First World War battlefield supply lines, it is believed to be the only railway of its kind still operating today.
Visitors can enjoy an 85-minute return journey through the Bedfordshire countryside, travelling almost three miles between Page’s Park and Stonehenge Works. Along the route are sharp curves, steep gradients, level crossings and views of Britain’s largest onshore wind turbine.
Operated by volunteers and managed by the Leighton Buzzard Narrow Gauge Railway Society, the railway is home to one of England’s largest collections of narrow-gauge locomotives and rolling stock. Both the railway and collection hold Accredited Museum status.
Running from March to October, with popular Santa Specials in December, it offers a memorable day out for visitors of all ages.
